Helpful Information for Years to Come
Your cabinetry is built to be lived with. Find helpful information about caring for your cabinets, understanding natural wood, making seasonal adjustments and knowing the details behind your door style.
Wood naturally expands and contracts as humidity levels in your home rise and fall with the seasons. Because of this, doors and drawer fronts may fit slightly tighter or looser at different times of year. Periodic hinge adjustment is a normal part of cabinet ownership.
Side-to-Side Adjustment
Used to even the gap between neighboring doors or shift a door slightly left or right.
Height Adjustment
Used to align the top and bottom of a door with adjacent doors. Depending on the hinge and mounting plate, this may require loosening mounting screws before repositioning.
Depth Adjustment
Used to move the door slightly toward or away from the cabinet so the face sits evenly.
Good Adjustment Practice
Make small adjustments and check the door after each change. Adjust both hinges gradually rather than making one large change at a single hinge.
Hinge models vary. If seasonal shrinking or swelling affects the fit of your doors and you’re unsure how to make an adjustment, we’re happy to help.
Proper care helps keep your cabinetry and countertops looking their best for years to come.
Cabinetry
For routine cleaning, we recommend Murphy’s Oil Soap, available at most major retailers.
Laminate Countertops & Cabinets
Use Simple Green or a mild dish soap with water for everyday cleaning.
Granite & Quartz Countertops
We recommend GranQuartz Stone Care Systems 3-in-1 Spray. Classic Industries keeps this product in stock at our office, so contact us if you need some.
Butcher Block Countertops
We recommend John Boos Mystery Oil and Board Cream to help maintain and protect the natural beauty of butcher block. We also keep these products in stock at our office.
Wood is a natural product. Variation and movement are normal characteristics of real wood and are part of what makes each cabinetry project unique.
Wood Color & Grain Variation
Grain pattern, texture and color will vary from board to board, and finished cabinetry may look somewhat different than samples displayed in our showroom. These natural variations are not considered defects.
Painted Finishes — Joint Lines
Fine lines, sometimes referred to as “pencil marks,” may become visible at joints where door frame and panel components meet. These lines are a normal characteristic of painted wood construction and are not considered a defect.
Stained Finishes — Wood Variation
Stain is translucent and allows the natural characteristics of the wood beneath it — including grain pattern, mineral streaks and density differences — to show through. Because of this, stained cabinetry will show natural variations in color and tone.
Sheen & Swatch Variation
Sheen affects the way light reflects from a painted surface. Because of this, the finished cabinetry can appear slightly different from a color swatch even when the same paint formula is used.
Wood Movement — Shrinking & Swelling
Wood naturally expands and contracts as humidity levels in the home change with the seasons. Doors and drawer fronts may fit slightly tighter or looser at different times of year, and periodic hinge adjustment should be expected.
Basements & Non-Climate-Controlled Spaces
Cabinetry installed in a basement or other space without active climate control carries additional moisture risk. Classic Industries recommends maintaining normal living-space temperature and humidity before installation and continuously afterward to help minimize excessive movement, cracking, splitting or swelling.
Natural variation in wood, grain and color is part of the material itself and should be expected in finished cabinetry.
The overlay you choose affects how much of the cabinet face frame is visible and the overall appearance of your cabinetry.
